Capital Queen for a Day, a chapter of the national 501(c)(3) organization Queen for a Day (QFAD), serves pediatric cancer patients who receive treatments at Children's National Medical Center and Inova Fairfax Hospital.
All chapters are dedicated to helping raise the self-esteem and confidence of pediatric cancer patients by hosting special events at an area hospital where local volunteers, pageant queens, servicemen and other community heroes help to transform little girls into "queens for a day" and little boys into "heroes for a day."
Capital Queen for a Day events feature makeovers, manicures and pedicures. Pageant queens conclude the event with a "coronation ceremony," crowning each patient as a champion over her illness with a keepsake tiara and crown pin.
Capital Heroes events feature local heroes such as soldiers, police officers and firefighters, and athletes. These community figures represent, and reinforce, the importance of bravery and courage to kids. Patients may receive badges, tours of squad cars or fire trucks, and autographs by professional athletes.
